What is P.R.P. Hair Rejuvenation?

The P.R.P. Hair Rejuvenation procedure is a method of re-thickening hair follicles through the application of platelet rich plasma. Using platelet rich plasma to rejuvenate hair follicles is a new procedure for the treatment of hair loss.

Our office has only recently started to offer this cutting-edge procedure ( and not all of our patients are comfortable sharing their photos) ,  so in order to give you an idea of what is possible we present the following video.

The video is from Great Directions who operate a hair loss clinic in Australia and utilize platelet-rich plasma treatments to thicken hair. Some of the results you will see are the product of both P.R.P. and hair transplants. P.R.P. can only strengthen existing hair follicles, and will not produce hair where active follicles no longer exist. This is why many of the results in this video show people who have had transplants in the front hairline area (bald) and P.R.P. in the crown area (thinning). Pay special attention to the results from those patients that underwent PRP treatment only.

What happens during the procedure?

The procedure is very quick, around 30 minutes, and can even be done during a patient’s lunch break.

First, the doctor draws the patient’s blood just like a blood test.

Secondly, the doctor puts numbing medicine onto the scalp areas which are going to be treated.  This ensures maximal comfort during the procedure.

While the numbing medicine is activating, the doctor will spin the patient’s blood sample in a special centrifuge.  After being spun, the blood will have separated into red blood and yellow plasma. The plasma is harvested and isolated, as this is the main ingredient for the P.R.P. Hair Rejuvenation procedure.

The plasma is then put into a syringe and activated with a calcium solution. This activation causes the release of many growth factors by the platelets.  The plasma and growth factors are then injected into the scalp of the patient.

The doctor ensures that the plasma equally reaches all the areas that are to be treated. After a month or two, initial results should be visible. For the best results, multiple treatments over multiple months is highly recommended.

How does it work?

The platelet-rich plasma is harvested from the patient’s own blood via centrifuge, and then injected into the scalp in order to foster the growth and renewal of thinning hair follicles.

The application of platelet-rich plasma acts as a catalyst which triggers the body’s own natural rejuvenation abilities. The growth factors contained in the plasma trick the body to respond as though the injection area has been injured, even though it has not been. This causes the body to engage it’s own healing elements and produce new collagen, tissue, and skin.

The injection of platelet-rich plasma also increases blood flow to the scalp.  This is an important factor because increased vascular blood flow is a large part of maintaining healthy follicles. Lack of vascular blood flow to the scalp is a common reason for thinning hair and poor follicle health.

The hair on top of our heads grows in a cycle that takes around 3 months to fully complete. As such, the best results for P.R.P. hair rejuvenation are achieved when the patient undergoes a treatment plan of 3 or more injections over 6 months to one year. Multiple treatments mean that we are adding the restorative power of PRP to the scalp at multiple different points during the hair growth cycle.

Who is a good candidate for P.R.P. Hair Rejuvenation?

Men and women of any age with thinning hair are great candidates for the P.R.P. Hair Rejuvenation procedure.  Also, anyone suffering from Alopecia Areata (spot baldness) is an  excellent candidate for the procedure.

Those who are completely bald are not good candidates for the procedure. This is because P.R.P. can only strengthen and fortify existing hair follicles. It will not produce hair where active follicles no longer exist. In that case, follicle transplants would be the patient’s better option.
